Matthew 6: 19-23

Jesus said to his disciples: "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and decay destroy, and thieves break in and steal. But store up treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor decay destroys, nor thieves break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.

"The lamp of the body is the eye. If your eye is sound, your whole body will be filled with light; but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be in darkness. And if the light in you is darkness, how great will the darkness be."

Dawg's Thought:

Today's prayer intention - for an end to abortion and the use of contraception.

As everyone is still feeling the effects from this great recession period, there are a lot more commercials on investing in gold. The great argument they are selling is that it is good to "diversify" your investments.

Looking at today's reading, I have to wonder: how am I "diversifying" my investment in the heavenly kingdom? After all, if this was the only time I work at "investing" into the kingdom of Heaven, how would my neighbor who doesn't get these emails know about the goodness of God?

This list has been sent out before, but it's always a good reminder of the investment we make in heaven. Going beyond that, it's also a goo reminder of the investment we make in building the kingdom of God here on this earth.

Seven Corporal Acts of Mercy

1. To feed the hungry
2. To give drink to the thirsty.
3. To clothe the naked.
4. To visit and ransom the captives.
5. To shelter the homeless.
6. To visit the sick.
7. To bury the dead.

Seven Spiritual Acts of Mercy

1. Instruct the ignorant.
2. Counsel the doubtful.
3. Admonish sinners.
4. Bear wrongs patiently.
5. Forgive offences willingly.
6. Comfort the afflicted.
7. Pray for the living and the dead.

One final note: when I think of the story of St. Damien of Molokai, he saw an injustice and he reached out to the outcast (in his case the lepers who were exiled). One of the first things that he did was to point to the beauty of heaven. They built a church, made parks, and renovated broken down buildings so that the beauty around them would give the impoverished hearts of the lepers the hope of heaven. He built treasure in heaving by awakening the desire of heaven in the hearts of the outcast. How are you doing this in your life today?

Take care and God Bless.
