Mark 8:34 - 9:1

Jesus summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them, "Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the Gospel will save it. What profit is there for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? What could one give in exchange for his life? Whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this faithless and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels."

He also said to them, "Amen, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see that the Kingdom of God has come in power."

Dawg's thought:

Today's prayer intention is for those in authority, that they may create and support laws that uphold the dignity of life.

There are a lot of struggles throughout the day that we all experience. Some of them consume our minds more than others.

A few weeks ago I wrote about my new "get me going" phrase: obedience through hope. The hope of being with Christ in heaven is the major one and it normally gets lost somewhere around 7:30 am when I check my email and realize that:

- I'm a lot further behind on work that I thought
- I don't have anything to wear that doesn't need ironing (yes, I am a bachelor)
- I have *insert task that I committed to 3 weeks ago* tonight and I completely forgot
- ...

There are many distractions that slowly draw our focus away from our hope in Jesus. It's scary going into "self preservation" mode because those are the times, for me at least, that I forget to "deny myself, take up my cross and follow Jesus." Those are the times my hope in Jesus begins to falter.

We have been given faith, hope and love as a means to be obedient in "denying ourselves, taking up our cross and following Jesus." Today, be aware of the role each theological virtue plays in your own life and remember that God gives us the means to be obedient to Him so that we can one day praise Him eternally in heaven. Take care and God Bless.
