Mark 8:14-21

The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, and they had only one loaf with them in the boat. Jesus enjoined them, "Watch out, guard against the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod." They concluded among themselves that it was because they had no bread. When he became aware of this he said to them, "Why do you conclude that it is because you have no bread? Do you not yet understand or comprehend? Are your hearts hardened? Do you have eyes and not see, ears and not hear? And do you not remember, when I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many wicker baskets full of fragments you picked up?" They answered him, "Twelve." "When I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many full baskets of fragments did you pick up?" They answered him, "Seven." He said to them, "Do you still not understand?"

Dawg's thought:

Today's prayer intention is for those affected by the forest fires in Australia.

"The leaven of the Pharisees ... of Herod: the corruptive action of leaven was an apt symbol of the evil dispositions both of the Pharisees and of Herod toward Jesus. The disciples of Jesus are warned against sharing such rebellious attitudes toward Jesus" - New American Bible Commentary

What "leaven" do we have to be careful of in today's world?

At times, the one I struggle with is humility. In today's world, it seems that those who are seen as humble are seen as weak. Those who forgive and willing to let go are doormats. What man wants to be seen as weak? What man wants to be seen as a doormat?

Yet, thinking of His Holy Face that was battered and bruised, Our Lord was strong in His humility. Even today, as He forgives me much more than I deserve to be forgiven, He is strong in His love and humility.

It makes me sad to see the "leaven" of today's world. It's truly sad to know that life begins at conception, yet knowing that there are those who want to deny that abortion is murder. It's truly sad to know that marriage as God intended is between a man and a woman, yet knowing that there are those who want to redefine it for their own purpose.

It makes me want to be much more steadfast in prayer and spiritual reading, for there's a lot of leaven out there. Yet, we need not fear, for Our Lord Who fed five thousand is generous in showing His grace so that we may know His truth. Take care and God Bless.
