Luke 6:20-26

Raising his eyes toward his disciples Jesus said:
"Blessed are you who are poor,
for the Kingdom of God is yours.
Blessed are you who are now hungry,
for you will be satisfied.
Blessed are you who are now weeping,
for you will laugh.
Blessed are you when people hate you,
and when they exclude and insult you,
and denounce your name as evil
on account of the Son of Man.
Rejoice and leap for joy on that day!
Behold, your reward will be great in heaven.
For their ancestors treated the prophets
in the same way.

But woe to you who are rich,
for you have received your consolation.
But woe to you who are filled now,
for you will be hungry.
Woe to you who laugh now,
for you will grieve and weep.
Woe to you when all speak well of you,
for their ancestors treated the false
prophets in this way."

Dawg's thought:

Today's prayer intention is for those battling the wildfires in the West.

"Luke's sermon may be outlined as follows:
- an introduction consisting of blessings and woes (Luke 6:20-26)
- the love of one's enemies (Matthew 6:27-36)
- the demands of loving one's neighbor (Luke 6:37-42)
- good deeds as proof of one's goodness (Luke 6:43-45)
- a parable illustrating the result of listening to and acting on the words of Jesus (Luke 6:46-49)."

- New American Bible commentary

Here on earth, we can find so many things to console us, but in the end, it is God Who consoles us. As I read through today's reading of Luke's version of The Beatitudes, I couldn't help but think to myself, "Jesus isn't saying that the things of this earth aren't bad, but how much better to rely on Him versus turning to other things for comfort."

I think about my own life. How many times do I find comfort in the hope that God will provide versus trying to find it myself? Some have found their consolation in riches. Others have found their consolation in addictions. How much harder is it to rely on God when you are rich? How much harder is it to rely on God when you have the means to feed your addiction? It's a hard enough relying on God in today's world.

Let us desire a clean heart that longs to trust and serve in The Lord alone. Take care and God Bless.
