Luke 8: 19-21

The mother of Jesus and his brothers came to him but were unable to join him because of the crowd. He was told, "Your mother and your brothers are standing outside and they wish to see you." He said to them in reply, "My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it."

Dawg's Thought:

Today's prayer intention - for special grace in the areas of your life which you struggle with.

There are some friends that you consider family. In most cases, these friends are the ones who has gone through a tough situation with you as a means of support. You may have superficially bonded with them over something that you have in common, but in the end, it is the fact that you were able to share your cross with them, and they have shared theirs with you. These are usually the friends that get elevated to be like your brothers and your sisters.

These "brothers and sisters" do not take away from the familial relationships that you have with your own brothers and sisters. In fact, it ends up being an even greater blessing. It is wonderful to have those you can turn to who will be with you regardless of the many challenges of life.

A familial bond is always present regardless of the situation. Faithful friends are the ones who prove that they will be present regardless of the situation.

If we desire to be brothers and sisters of Christ, how important is it to "hear the word of God and act on it", even when the word is difficult? How important is it to remain steadfast in obedience to God when it may even mean hurting or offending someone who is our family, whether by blood or by circumstance?

Even more, how important is it to "hear the word of God"? If you ask me to describe my brother, I can give you a lot of information about him. I can tell you some of the situations that he's been through, and I can tell you how he has reacted in those situations.

I know this because of the time spent with him. Over the years with living in different states, I can only guess what his daily life is like. I can only imagine what television shows he likes to watch. I am not the expert on his life as I once was.

If we want to be a brother or sister of Our Lord, wouldn't we want to be "experts" on His ways by spending time with Him ... spending time reading about Him ... spending time reading the writings of those who are now in union with Him ... spending time knowing the teachings of His bride, the Church?

It seems that's the way things work out in life: the more we get to know someone, the more we can be with them through the hard times ... the more we are with someone in the hard times, the more we will get to know them. Let us always make decisions so that we can be in a place where we can hear His word and act on it. Take care and God Bless.
