Luke 12: 54-59

Jesus said to the crowds, "When you see a cloud rising in the west you say immediately that it is going to rain--and so it does; and when you notice that the wind is blowing from the south you say that it is going to be hot--and so it is. You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky; why do you not know how to interpret the present time?

"Why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? If you are to go with your opponent before a magistrate, make an effort to settle the matter on the way; otherwise your opponent will turn you over to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the constable, and the constable throw you into prison. I say to you, you will not be released until you have paid the last penny."

Dawg's Thought:

Today's prayer intention - for those you know who are in need of healing.

Before I go for a bike ride, I check the tire pressure to make sure that everything is ready to go. I make sure I have my head covering: my helmet and a sweat catcher. I make sure I have my wallet, phone, and keys. I make sure I have my lock.

There was one day when I left the house without a helmet. It was early in the morning, and I got about a mile down the street before I realized that I didn't have it on. I had a brief thought that I would be okay; after all, I hadn't been in an accident up until that point. Yet, just in case, I went back home and got my helmet. I may be a few minutes late, but I timed the ride so that I would get there 15 minutes before so the sacrifice seemed minimal.

On the way home, I was really glad that I had my helmet because I got into an accident. It was a small decision and a small sacrifice that yielded great results.

When it comes to who we are as persons, what safeguards do we have in place? What do we need to let go of that is "deflating" our ride with the Lord? Are we living a life that is dangerous to ourselves because we presume too much from God and neglect our own responsibilities?

I remember once when my brother asked me why Blessed Pope John Paul II rode around in a car with protective glass. This was after he was shot, of course. He asked the question because he thought that if Blessed JP2 was a man of God, he would have just trusted in God's protection. I remember me responding that if God provided the glass, isn't that a form of God's protection?

We have the Sacred Scriptures. We have the Sacraments. We have a treasury of beautiful prayers ... powerful prayers ... "kick you in the face" prayers. If we believe in a heaven beyond this world, wouldn't we want to draw grace from The One Who is there now? We can't get there on our own, but I know that it also requires a sacrifice on our own part.

"Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil. For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens. Therefore, put on the armor of God, that you may be able to resist on the evil day and, having done everything, to hold your ground. So stand fast with your loins girded in truth, clothed with righteousness as a breastplate, and your feet shod in readiness for the gospel of peace. In all circumstances, hold faith as a shield, to quench all [the] flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God." - Ephesians 6: 11-17

Take care and God Bless.
