Luke 7: 1-10

When Jesus had finished all his words to the people, he entered Capernaum. A centurion there had a slave who was ill and about to die, and he was valuable to him. When he heard about Jesus, he sent elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and save the life of his slave. They approached Jesus and strongly urged him to come, saying, "He deserves to have you do this for him, for he loves our nation and he built the synagogue for us." And Jesus went with them, but when he was only a short distance from the house, the centurion sent friends to tell him, "Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof. Therefore, I did not consider myself worthy to come to you; but say the word and let my servant be healed. For I too am a person subject to authority, with soldiers subject to me. And I say to one, Go, and he goes; and to another, Come here, and he comes; and to my slave, Do this, and he does it." When Jesus heard this he was amazed at him and, turning, said to the crowd following him, "I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith." When the messengers returned to the house, they found the slave in good health.

Dawg's Thought:

Today's prayer intention - for those who are traveling.

The centurion didn't feel worthy to approach God and ask for this request. He had faith in God's dominion through his knowledge of how he has authority over his servants. Having others go and tell Jesus didn't diminish the faith of the centurion, but rather it was an even greater expression of it through humility.

I have those friends of mine who, while they may believe that there is a God, they don't recognize Him as "God" (hence the reason why many of them have stopped going to church). Yet, when it comes time for something serious like a job interview or a medical emergency, they ask for my prayer. I am glad to pray for them; I am glad to be their messenger.

At some point in my prayers for them, I wonder what happens if the prayer request is answered? Will they be thankful and express that thankfulness through living their lives acknowledging that Jesus is Lord? Will they remain unchanged because their prayer was answered? If the latter is the case, is it in humility that they ask for these prayers? Does it come from a point of being humble and knowing that they can't be before the Living God?

Or, does it come from pride and fear? Does it come from a place that expects God to answer prayers without the consequence of living an authentic live in Christ? Does it come from a place that is simply wants to receive the graces without carrying the cross?

Regardless, let us continue to offer our prayers for those who believe, those who don't believe, and those who believe yet choose to avoid the responsibilities of living a life in Christ. We do not know the ways of God and what He will do with our prayers on behalf of those we know. There is one thing that I know, though ...

" ... say the word and let my servant be healed. For I too am a person subject to authority, with soldiers subject to me. And I say to one, Go, and he goes; and to another, Come here, and he comes; and to my slave, Do this, and he does it."

We know Jesus' authority. We know Jesus' mercy. We know that Jesus will do great with the prayers that we offer ourselves, for those who may not "know" Him, and for those who, while knowing of Him, fear getting "know" Him and His authority.

Take care and God Bless.
