Mark 12: 28-34

One of the scribes came to Jesus and asked him, "Which is the first of all the commandments?" Jesus replied, "The first is this: Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these." The scribe said to him, "Well said, teacher. You are right in saying, He is One and there is no other than he. And to love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices." And when Jesus saw that he answered with understanding, he said to him, "You are not far from the Kingdom of God." And no one dared to ask him any more questions.

Dawg's Thought:

Today's prayer intention - for an end to abortion and the use of contraception.

" ... with ALL your heart, with ALL you soul, with ALL you mind, and with ALL your strength ... "

It make me uncomfortable to think about the repetitiveness of the word "all" in reference to how I am to love God. I have a hard time loving my family and friends whom I can encounter face to face. I have a hard enough time loving the ways of God when I don't understand it.

Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta is quoted as saying, "I have found the paradox that if I love until it hurts, then there is no hurt, but only more love."

Here is someone who has been a great example in our generation of what it means to love, but what if her calling to love God in the poor is not my calling? I would think that it wouldn't matter because at the core of it all, Christ tells us today to love God with our whole being. The same calling of a humble woman in Calcutta who loved beyond her own comfort zone is the same calling that I share in Phoenix, Arizona.

Lord God, grant that I, your humble servant
may love You beyond my own comfort zone,
so that my love for You may truly be my "all".
I feel limited in my ability to love You.
Lord, make up in me anything that is lacking
so that I may be able to love You totally,
and in loving You totally,
desiring to love Your children here on earth
so that You may be glorified. Amen.

Take care and God Bless.
