Thursday in the First Week of Lent
Matthew 7: 7-12

Jesus said to his disciples: "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Which one of you would hand his son a stone when he asked for a loaf of bread, or a snake when he asked for a fish? If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good things to those who ask him.

"Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. This is the law and the prophets."

Dawg's Thought:

Today's prayer intention - for an end to abortion and the use of contraception.

What father would hand his son a stone when his son is hungry, no matter how much the son asks? Sometimes, the father gives the son the stone.

While all analogies fall short, I would be the son that would rack up a lot of dental bills.

I would also be hungry and malnourished because I am not freely receiving what Our Loving God gives me to help me mature. As I grow cranky from the hunger, I can imagine going from stone to stone and finding that what I am asking for isn't fulfilling me.

All the while, Our Father has bread and fish to give.

Hopefully, in my folly, I am maturing. Hopefully, I will then stop praying for and gnawing on stones (though I may move over to nails, bottles and asphalt). I am thankful that God works with us in our spiritual immaturity so that not only will our prayers be purified, but also our hearts. As we are purified and grow in maturity, hopefully we will be more like Christ Who prayed, "not as I will, but as You will, Father."

Hopefully, Christ's prayer will be my prayer at every moment so that I won't lose too many teeth.

Take care and God Bless.
