Matthew 12:1-8

Jesus was going through a field of grain on the sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick the heads of grain and eat them. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, "See, your disciples are doing what is unlawful to do on the sabbath." He said to the them, "Have you not read what David did when he and his companions were hungry, how he went into the house of God and ate the bread of offering, which neither he nor his companions but only the priests could lawfully eat? Or have you not read in the law that on the sabbath the priests serving in the temple violate the sabbath and are innocent? I say to you, something greater than the temple is here. If you knew what this meant, I desire mercy, not sacrifice, you would not have condemned these innocent men. For the Son of Man is Lord of the sabbath."

Dawg's thought:

Today's prayer intention is for the aunt of a friend of mine who has brain tumors and it seems like things have taken a turn for the worse.

"I desire mercy, not sacrifice..."

My initial thought for today's reading was to write something about how we need to trust in God's mercy.

As I started meditating more and more, though, I started to think about how I need to be more merciful with myself so that I can be open to God's mercy. I condemn myself more than I'd like to admit, and this cuts me off from God's mercy.

As I meditate on this more, I realize that this is really rooted in the sin of pride. It is my own pride that condemns myself, and therefore it is my ow pride that cuts me off from God's mercy and grace.

It is not unlike the Pharisees who, through their own pride, condemned Jesus and the disciples.

Today, let us strive to put away pride and all other sinful things that cut us off from God's mercy. Take care and God Bless.
