Luke 5: 33-39

The scribes and Pharisees said to Jesus, "The disciples of John the Baptist fast often and offer prayers, and the disciples of the Pharisees do the same; but yours eat and drink." Jesus answered them, "Can you make the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come, and when the bridegroom is taken away from them, then they will fast in those days." And he also told them a parable. "No one tears a piece from a new cloak to patch an old one. Otherwise, he will tear the new and the piece from it will not match the old cloak. Likewise, no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins, and it will be spilled, and the skins will be ruined. Rather, new wine must be poured into fresh wineskins. And no one who has been drinking old wine desires new, for he says, "The old is good."

Dawg's Thought:

Today's prayer intention - for those who are mourning the loss of a loved one.

A few months ago, I did a pilgrimage in Italy. I had the chance to go to many holy places, experience many new things, and even be 20 feet away from Pope Benedict XVI.

Yet, even in that blessed context, I was away from familiar places. There were many days that I went traveling and feeling isolated because I did not speak Italian (I bought an app for my iPod Touch and it wasn't efficient ... at all ... )

It was an interesting way to enter into Holy Week. While I was not "fasting" from what we typically know, it was a "fast" that helped me enter into Holy Week.

I know that we have Christ present in Word and Sacrament. Yet, I also know that we will one day spend an eternity with Him ... praising Him ... and we will no longer be fasting from worshiping Him face to Holy Face.

There are a few memorable fasts that I remember. One thing that I do remember is that fasting often puts things into proper context. Food ... driving ... how I monitor and spend my time ...

It is good that we are here! It is good that we cannot see the full glory of Our Lord at this time! It is good, and as we look forward to encountering the glory of Our Lord, we can let this time of fasting be a time of discarding the "trendy" ways or the "in" ways. May we seek His glory in joyful preparation so that when it is our time to see His glory, we will not be a mismatched cloth to His radiance.

Take care and God Bless.
