Thursday in the Fourth Week of Advent
Luke 1: 46-56

Mary said:

"My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;
my spirit rejoices in God my savior.
for he has looked upon his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.
He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm,
and has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant Israel
for he remembered his promise of mercy,
the promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children for ever."

Mary remained with Elizabeth about three months and then returned to her home.

Dawg's Thought:

Today's prayer intention - for wisdom in decisions.

During the Christmas season, we all want to find a good gift. I often took it upon myself to find a good gift because I wanted those I bought gifts for to know how much I cared for them.

Along with the simple act of giving a gift, there is a lot that someone can find out through the gift I purchased. Sometimes it can show my thoughtfulness if it is something that I spent a lot of time looking for. Other times it can be the opposite.

A gift can oftentimes show the special relationship I have with someone. I once gave my dad a guitar that I built, which reflected my knowledge of his past musical skills (he stopped playing the guitar after my older brother smashed his old Yamaha when I was a kid). There was both a financial commitment and a time commitment in that one gift.

What often comes after receiving a gift is a response of gratitude (to varying degrees, of course).

We can learn a lot from Mary's response to God's gift of mercy, faithfulness, and providence. Even moreso, we have a prayer that is given to us as a gift in times when we are feeling lowly and in need of help. We have a gift from Our Blessed Mother that points to the faithfulness and mercy of Our Father.

Just as we can know about our relationship with a friend of family member through a gift, we can also know about that relationship through the response. What is our response to Our Lord, Who is the giver of all good gifts?

Take care and God Bless.
