Mark 9:30-37

Jesus and his disciples left from there and began a journey through Galilee, but he did not wish anyone to know about it. He was teaching his disciples and telling them, "The Son of Man is to be handed over to men and they will kill him, and three days after his death the Son of Man will rise." But they did not understand the saying, and they were afraid to question him.

They came to Capernaum and, once inside the house, he began to ask them, "What were you arguing about on the way?" But they remained silent. For they had been discussing among themselves on the way who was the greatest.

Then he sat down, called the Twelve, and said to them, "If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all." Taking a child, he placed it in their midst, and putting his arms around it, he said to them, "Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me."

Dawg's thought:

Today's prayer intention is for an end to the use of contraception.

The Super Bowl in Miami. The NBA All-Star game in Las Vegas. Two recent "big gatherings" that seemed to have just as much news coverage of the parties as sporting event itself. The parties itself was comprised of a "who's who" list of people.

Were you on the list? I didn't think so.

Today, the disciples didn't just want to be on the VIP list. They wanted to be the headliner. That was all before Jesus brought the true headliner before them: the lowly... the poor... the discarded.

We are not exempt from the list. While I know my own "worldly" poverty, the more I come to know the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the more I am aware of my own "spiritual" poverty. I'm sure you know the feeling as well.

With Lent beginning tomorrow with Ash Wednesday, it is a great time to reflect upon our own poverty and how we are called to be "poor in spirit." It is also a great time to offer our own sacrifice as a means to serve the poor, both worldly and spiritually. Finally, it's also a great time to recognize God's wisdom in calling us all to be "poor in spirit." Take care and God Bless.
